One step at a time

Updated: Jul 17, 2020

Do you know what you get when you climb to the top of a summit or stand at the base of a waterfall? Perspective.

You can see how big the world is and how small you are in comparison. You can also see that some things in life are so easy while some are hard and some seem impossible, but it’s OK because you can do hard things and you can also do the impossible things. That summit that seemed so impossible to reach is now before you as you look out at the mountain ranges — vast shades of blue — and feel the sun and wind in your face. Your heart resumes it’s normal rhythm and you breath in deep and let it release from your mouth. You feel alive.

Yeah, it was hard but it was worth it, you tell yourself as you gaze out at the world around you. It allows you to see that even though you couldn’t see the top when you started the trail, it was waiting on you as you took every small step toward it. It was waiting on you even when you had to take a break to catch your breath and even when you considered turning back.

Every summit you reach makes it easier to take on the next one that comes along. You can say, well I’ve never done that one before but let’s go! You build that confidence within yourself to keep going when you don’t know what’s around the corner — finding the courage to tell yourself whatever it is you can handle it — one step at a time. And that’s where I started.
